About Us

Tresco’s story begins with two organizations – Open Door Center and Socorro/Sierra Learning Service.

Open Door Center began it’s operation in 1968 with a volunteer staff in a facility on the property of Mesilla Christian Church. By the end of 1971, Open Door Center was serving 39 clients with paid staff of five part time employees and approximately 30 volunteers. In 1977, Open Door Center moved to a new location, 2325 E. Nevada Ave.

The Socorro program was established in 1974. Services offered the first three years included outreach and identification of persons needing services, summer school, Saturday day camps, and parent groups. In early 1976 a part-time work activities program was begun. In 1978 funding became more stable, and there was staff to provide a full time work activity program for adults. In 1981 a proposal was submitted and funded by the Health and Environment Department (now The Department of Health) to provide work activity services for adults in Truth or Consequences.

A merger was accomplished in 1982, which created the three-county program under one administration. The name Tresco was adopted for it’s reference to “tres condados”, or three counties.
